Pfft!
Almost all you guys are way too mainstream. BlackEmperor's was one of the only lists I seriously liked.
Just a tip, most mainstream directors and their high budget movies suck in comparison with low-budget independent films. They try so hard to fill it up with special effects that they take away from plot and story depth.

I don't see There Will be Blood, The Hurt Locker, or Lincoln on ANYONE's list.
These movies were true works of art, and blow high budget movies out of the water.

I know how to construct and execute a narrative, and yes usually "mainstream" directors/actors are mainstream for a reason... Coz they are actually good.

Paul Thomas Anderson, Kathryn Bigelow, and Steven Spielberg arent exactly underground directors.

And did you not see Pulp Fiction and Resevoir Dogs on most people's lists? Both independent films

(I forgot to put There Will Be Blood on my list by the way)

OP asked what is the best...not a list of 20 lol but whatever...

My favourite film is TDK.

Other films I think of highly...
City of God (brazillian), Bladerunner, The Good the Bad and the Ugly, Mulholland Drive, Leon the Professional, The Green Mile, Grave of the Fireflies (japanese), Once Upon a Time in America, The Intouchables (french)...just to name a few.

Grave of the Fireflies is a Studio Ghibli anime film. I think it's a very powerful anti war story.

It's impossible to choose just one.

The quote above perfectly explains why I listed 20.

You're clearly mistaken about what makes a director "good". The most mainstream ones are the ones with the most money, plain and simple. That doesn't mean that they can direct any better than anyone else.

And I stand by what I said about most lists here being too mainstream.

I like some films others hate, I hate some films others like. Being mainstream does not come into it nor should it ever. Like what you like, not what you are supposed to.

And why do they have the most money? Because they were recognized in a way, 99% of the time because of talent.

I could rant on about this for hours, but I'll just leave it at that for now.

Mainstream =\= Bad. Don't know where this ridiculous idea comes from. How good a movie is is largely dependent on the viewer, anyway

Movies are mainstream for a reason: They're good. Many people watched them and thought of them as good and thus they became "mainstream" or classics.

As for me:
Nolan's batman trilogy
Shining
Eyes Wide Shut
Django.
